I've been making websites for over a decade now. I remember buying Laura Lemay's book Teach Yourself HTML in a Week and making my first web page over the 4th of July weekend in 1995, using SimpleText for my HTML editor, Claris Works' graphics program, and NCSA Mosaic for a web browser. What a long way we've all come since then.
Over the years I've built dozens of websites, large and small, for organizations including Kaiser Permanente, UC San Francisco, Alameda County, Children's Hospital Oakland, the Institute for the Future, Openwave, LIVE 105 radio, Oracle, USWeb, Bank of America, Lexus, and Amnesty International. I also derive a lot of personal satisfaction in building websites for individuals to promote their businesses, hobbies or personal goals.
Here are some websites of the websites I've built in the last few years. With the exception of the Kaiser website, I was the sole designer and developer for all of these projects.
Shears CyclesShears Cycles buys and sells used motorcycles and parts. In addition to designing the website, I also developed a ColdFusion/SQL-based content management system that allows them to add bike information and photos, as well as update the content on other pages as well. Uploaded bike photos are automatically resized to fit the dimensions of the design. I also made use of a Javascript-based scrolling image gallery on the home page that dynamically updates images and text to reflect the current bikes for sale.
Technologies used: XHTML/CSS, JavaScript, ColdFusion, SQL
Kaiser Permanente Labor Management PartnershipI currently work at Kaiser and am the web developer for this site. I managed the redesign of this site that launched in April 2008. The site makes use of several AJAX/Spry applications with XML data feeds, Teamsite templates and workflow, a customized parametric search that mimics blog-style categorization and archives for news articles. There are also numerous Flash videos, and a few PHP applications that I have customized such as an ecard system.
Technologies used: XHTML/CSS, Ajax/Spry/XML, TeamSite templating and workflow, Flash, Flash Video, Windows Media, Verity parametric search, PHP
Ricky's sports theatre and grillRicky's, a San Leandro institution, was voted the #2 sports bar in the country by Sports Illustrated. I started this site for Ricky in 1996 and have redesigned it about 5 times since then. I built a ColdFusion application that allows Ricky to easily update his calendar of events. The site also makes use of Flickr slideshows, has numerous videos, as well as a talking Avatar which Ricky updates via a phone message.
Technologies used: XHTML/CSS, ColdFusion, SQL, Spry menus, Flash Video, Flickr, YouTube, SitePal
Fremont Cycle SalvageI designed and developed this site using ColdFusion and a database backend for a motorcyle store in Fremont CA. I created the homepage banner Flash animation which includes a bike sound effect. I built a content management system with ColdFusion which allows the staff to upload photos and information of bikes for sale, as well as update numerous other pages of the website on their own.
Technologies used: HTML/CSS, ColdFusion, SQL, Flash
Caren ArmstrongCaren Armstrong is a Bay Area-based, award-winning singer/songwriter. I designed and programmed and this for Caren, which includes mp3 clips of some of her songs, a Flickr photo gallery, show listing, newsletter sign-up, and blog. I set up Blogger as a content-management tool for other sections of thes site as well, allowing Caren to update her website easily on her own.
Technologies used: HTML/CSS, Blogger, Flickr
Beautiful-BassI designed this website in 2006 for Jeff Schmidt, a very talented Bay Area solo bassist. The site features a Movable-Type blog which I customized. Jeff is a very active blogger and tries out a lot of new things on this site, so it has morphed in both design and technlogy since I originally developed it, however the MovableType backend and basic templates remain in place.
Technologies used: HTML/CSS, MovableType
National TB CenterI was the web developer for this site from 2004-2006, and redesigned the website during that time. I piloted the development of a series of online audio-based CME courses for physicians. The courses were received with great enthusiasm and have been taken by several thousand users. Using ColdFusion and SQL, I built back-end reporting tools so that staff could easily generate reports on participant profiles as well as exam results.
Technologies used: HTML/CSS, ColdFusion, SQL, Windows Media, Real Media
Driting SandDrifting Sand is a Bay Area-based SurfPop band. The website features mp3 audio samples, as well as links to buy their music and other swag. I made use of Blogger as a content-management system so that the band can update the site easily.
